There are many different naturally-occurring forms of folic acid, often referred to collectively as folate. Folic acid (pteroylmonoglutamate) does not occur in food, but is the form of folate in the supplements used in the studies referred to here. Because all forms of folate are metabolically linked it is probable that all protect against NTD, but we do not know.
