✦ Synopsis
X Ž X . Ž . Tertiary phosphines with pendant arenes R PR R s Cy, Ph; R s CH CH Ph or CH CHPh 1-4 were synthesized 2 22 2 2 Ž . w Ž 1 6 X .x Ž . and converted to the corresponding chelating ruthenium II complexes RuCl h :h -R PR 1a-4a . Halide exchange 2 2 w Ž 1 6 X .x Ž . yielded RuI h :h -R PR 1b,3b , which were structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The systems 2 2 Ž . Ž . 1a,2a,4a were activated for ROMP of norbornene by addition of a diazo compound trimethylsilyldiazomethane and Ž . Ž . Ž . Ž Ž . . AgBF A , by a diazo compound alone B or by a combination of the sodium salt NaB Ar Ar s 3,5-CF C H and 4 f 4 f 3 2 6 3
Ž . methanol C . The influence of the thereby created differing number of accessible coordination sites on the polymerization Ž . activity and the polymer microstructure cisrtrans ratio was investigated. The nucleophilicity of the counter ion was found to play a crucial role in terms of catalytic activity.
