Passing ketene into the molten compound ( I ) did not give a spirolactam (3) [6,7J or a tricyclic cyclobutanone (4), but instead a crystalline product C17H12NCl (yield 75 %; m.p. 138-138.5"C), which, on the basis of its IR, UV, and IH-NMR spectra, is 9-chloro-6-methylindeno[3,2-b]quinoline (7) [IR (CC14) methyl bands at 1390 and 2980cm-1;
