Since I have dealt elsewhere with the first version of Anselm's demonstration of the existence of perfection, 1 a consideration of the second, more cogent, formulation is attempted here. The second may be condensed and paraphrased as follows:
I. I have a concept of that than which nothing greater can be conceived (perfection). 2. It is greater to be a being that necessarily exists than to be one that only contingently exists. 3. Hence, I have a concept of a being that has necessary existence. 4. To deny existence to a being that has necessary existence would be absurd because self-contradictory. .'. God, or a necessary being, exists.
