✦ Synopsis
In addition to all these R&D efforts for cost optimisation, supplementary activities at many development groups are currently concentrating on the development of a concept for secondgeneration cells to be operated at reduced operating temperatures, below 800°C. At this lower operating temperature it may be possible to use cheaper materials for interconnects, which might be operated without protective coatings, and for peripheral high-temperature components, resulting in reduced material costs. Furthermore, a reduced operating temperature could simplib the system management and lead to longer lifetimes for SOFC stacks.
