✦ Synopsis

The paper discusses the development and application of general-purpose software for use in the design and analysis of a wide variety of complex 2D multibody dynamic systems.

The software was developed with two main objectives. The first was the application of recent software-engineering methodologies and object-oriented programming to provide easy-touse code which was transparent, adaptable, and portable across a variety of platforms. The second was the effective integration of seemingly independent design and analysis tools into one package. The software capabilities included modelling, and kinematic, dynamic and finite-element stress analyses.

Because of the highly interactive nature of the design process, a graphical user interface was developed for easy operation of the software. System modelling was simplified through the use of prototypes of commonly used component, constraint and force objects. Postprocessing techniques were used to provide the results in the form of animated time variation of the model, freeze-frame displays, time histories, contour plots and formatted report generation.

## Abstract Recently, several authors have proposed the use of implicit Runge–Kutta (IRK) integrators for the dynamics of multibody systems. On the other hand, Newmark‐type or structural integrators have shown to be appropriate when real‐time performance is demanded in that field. Therefore, the fo

A new finite element beam formulation for modelling flexible multibody systems undergoing large rigidbody motion and large deflections is developed. In this formulation, the motion of the 'nodes' is referred to a global inertial reference frame. Only Cartesian position co-ordinates are used as degre
