โฆ Synopsis
Sulphonated amino-formaldehyde polycondensates have been used as drilling mud dispersants. The use of these water-soluble polymers as drilling mud thinners is novel. They are effective in controlling the rheological properties of drilling fluids in deep drilling within the desired range. They are far superior to commercially available dispersants in rendering drilling muds thermally stable. The yield point of drilling muds treated with commercial dispersants dropped 83% compared with a drop of 33% when sulphonated-urea-formaldehyde was used as dispersing agent after 24 hr of ageing at 350ยฐF. Maximum thermal stability is obtained for sulphonated-urea-formaldehyde resins or when the amino group is all urea instead of melamine. The effect of these additives on plastic viscosity of treated drilling muds is slight. However, their effects, on yield point, gel strength and fluid loss are very significant.
