There is a need for more compact and versatile cryocoolers for instrument cooling and vacuum pump applications. The development of a variable speed, compact, pneumatically actuated G-M cryocooler is described. The influence of speed on P-V diagrams at various temperatures is illustrated and cycle modifications to promote higher efficiencies discussed.
