β¦ Synopsis
A scanning Hall probe microscope that is capable of observing both topographic and magnetic images simultaneously has been developed by constructing a conducting needle, used for the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) measurements, adjacent to the Hall junction of 0.6 mm square. The needle also enables the Hall probe to approach the sample without contact and to scan just above it with close proximity. Morphologies and local magnetic distributions on the surfaces of magnetic recording media, observed by our microscope, indicates that lateral spatial resolution is better than 1 mm for both STM and magnetic measurements.
