✦ Synopsis

This paper briefly reviews a range of well-known design methods and describes how they can be strategically combined in groups to assist the re-design of a safety harness for tree workers. The grouping of the design methods has been presented as a formalised design strategy which considers four key stages in the design process. The authors propose that the strategy can be successfully applied to re-design a specific class of products for which the term 'established semi-technical products' is coined. The classification includes products, such as protective clothing, sports equipment, and footwear. The design strategy is, therefore, potentially of considerable interest to those involved in the development of products of this type.
