โœฆ Synopsis

The cktrosorption process for desalinizing saline uatcr was conceiwd in 1963. It is a cyclic process in uhich ions in the feed water arc first sorbed into special three-layer membranes under the influence of a driving voltage and thus are removed from water and then dLorbed from the membranes to regenerate them. R&arch on the process has been sponsored continuously since 1%3 by the OtTice of Saline Water of the United States Dcpartmcnt of the Interior. Methods of preparing acceptabk three-hyrr~metnbrattes from available ion-selective membranes and non-&t&e tnataials have been developed. Ekctrosorption desalination experiments have shown (hat high coulomb efikiencies can be obtained. high degrees of desalination can beobtained. and dcsorption requires no more than X5:/, of the total time. hforcovcr, the results of short-term experiments strong!y suggest that feeds containing CaSOa or C&HCOJ)Z can be desalinized with no apparent cell blockage or damage to the membranes from precipitates. A new mcmbr-.ne process

Most important in any economic analysis of a desalting process is a comparison frame of reference. This "frame of reference" provides the means for comparison with other processes. One of the most generally accepted cost references for desalination plants is that published by Oak Ridge National Labo
