β¦ Synopsis
Developing the Union-Free Commitment
Most union-free managements recognize that the true costs of unionization are not the higher wages or benefits that can result from collective bargaining, but rather the restrictive work rules, the constant drain on management resources, the time spent on union-induced issues, and the divisive "we-they" attitude a union brings to the workplace.
An effective strategy for union avoidance must begin with a total commitment on the part of top management to the concept of remaining union-free. That philosophy must be formally communicated, so that each employee, manager, and supervisor is absolutely clear on the company's intent to avoid unionization. The statement of nonunion philosophy should be communicated prominently in the employee handbook and other publications. It should also be included in supervisory and administrative manuals and should constitute an integral part of the new employee orientation program.
Emphatic communications on this subject help to convince employees that management is serious in its commitment to remain union-free.
