anagement phobia is running rampant in corporate America, according to a recent Wall Streetjournal article. In contrast to previous decades, many M employees now have no interest in becoming managers. Managers in the '90s tend to occupy demanding and insecure positions that offer significantly fewer perks than ever before. Not surprisingly, senior executives are finding that recruiting people capable of leading their enterprises into the next century is a long, dinlcult, and frustrating process. However, with a global trend toward organizational restructuring and streamlining, executives need to develop managers who can cope with the ever-changing marketplace and increasing responsibihties. Without capable managers, these flatter, leaner organizations cannot sustain quality, service, and financial performance. Developing new managers, therefore, is a critical strategic challenge for organizations that hope to prosper in the years ahead.
