This paper illustrates the reasons for basing a diagnostic expert system on a model of the system being diagnosed, and describes the evolution of a qualitative representation for such models of mechanical devices. It is shown on a simple example how using this representation for simulation can form the basis for an expert system performing a diagnostic task. The final representation described is being applied to the simulation (and thus the diagnosis) of a wide range of man-made physical mechanisms.
