✦ Synopsis
Because of interest in the int;amolecula.r hydrogen abstraction that I-benzoyl-8.benzyLnaphthalene undergoes from a triplet state having the x-n* COn~g~r~~iGn, we also prepared modifications of this molecule where one and two deuterium atoms have replaced the hydrogen atoms of the pl~o~o~bi~e methylene group. As measured in glassforming, hydrocarbon sokvcnts at liquid-nitrogen and liquid-argon temperatures, the deuterium atoms in these benzoylbenzylnaphtbalenes make tierkclves noticeable by shifting the phosphorescence spectrum hypsochromi~Uy, lengthening the phosphorescence lifetime, and reducing the photochemical reactivity.
