✦ Synopsis

These lectures constituted a course given at the Boyal Institution in February and March of 1959. Before publication they were revised to include some of the more recent developments, even up to 1952. The titles of the lectures are : LOW temperature problems ; a general survey (SIUON) ; The temperature range below lo absolute (KURTI) ; Liquid helium (ALLEN) ; Superconductivity (MENDELBSOHN). I'he subject dealt with is thus the phenomena ocmvring at extreme low temperatures (not exceeding IO0 K). For the chemical engineer this ileld will only be of tbeoretclrl interest, since there are (as yet?) no industrial applications. However, all those who are interested will very much enjoy the brief, simply and clearly written, and well-founded survey given of this field, which is of the utmost importaucc for pure physics. P.
