โฆ Synopsis
A recently proposed model equation for the prediction of the Young's modulus of elasticity of composite materials has been applied to platelet reinforced composites. The effect of platelet volume fraction, axial ratio and orientation on the effective Young's modulus was assessed and the range of validity of the equation was discussed. The calculated values were compared with experimental data drawn from the literature for platelet-containing glass, ceramic and metal matrix composites. Good agreement between experimental and calculated values was achieved. As the equation contains no fitting parameters, it is of great practical importance for Young's modulus prediction in platelet reinforced materials.
