โฆ Synopsis
In
an earlier publication, a modified Kramers-Kronig transformation is used to obtain the spectra of the absorption and refractive indices, k and n, for several organic liquids from ATR spectra employing s-polarized light. In this paper the method is extended to include p-polarization and data presented for benzene. While the method is shown to give results to a precision of about 5% or better when totally independent runs are compared, it is suspected that much of this uncertainty has a systematic, rather than random, origin. Possible sources for this are considered and a remedy suggested. Finally, as a demonstration, the method is applied to resolving the spectra of k and n for an anisotropic coating of eicosane into spectra for the electric field normal to and parallel to the prism-icosane interface respectively.
