✦ Synopsis

Abstract

Contact angle of water and formamide droplets on natural quartz crystals were observed. The specific surface free energy (SSFE) of m, r, and z faces, calculated using the Fowkes approximation, were approximately 54‐69 mN/m. The length of the normal line from the center of the crystal to each face (h~i~) was observed and compared with the SSFE. Though, Wulff's relationship was well satisfied for synthesized crystals, h~i~ was not proportional to SSFE for natural crystal. We propose an idea of β€œΞ³ center”, which correspond to Wulff's point for ideal equilibrium shape crystal. We concluded that, crystal face with the larger SSFE has larger growth rate even for natural crystal. (Β© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

In this paper, a new method of determining the surface tension of the solid material that a microporous membrane is made from is introduced. The method is based on the well known determination of the so-called contact angle that is formed on the solid/liquid/gaseous three phase line. A nonideal stat

The generally accepted strategy of neglecting the polar nature of halogenated liquids in the surface energy determination using the Lifshitz-van der Waals/Lewis acid-base (LW/AB) approach may lead to erroneous and inconsistent results for polar solids. This was demonstrated in a simulation study car

Contact angles of diiodomethane, bromoform, water, formamide, and glycerol were measured on cholesterol surfaces both bare and precontacted with bile salts (sodium cholate, sodium deoxycholate, and sodium chenodeoxycholate). Ten different sets of the measured contact angles were used for the calcula
