✦ Synopsis
A method was developed for the determination of phosphorus and sulphur in edible oils and fats by wavelengthdispersive x-ray Ñuorescence (WDXRF) spectrometry. The samples were measured in disposable liquid cells after solidiÐcation with 15% stearic acid to obtain a stable measurement. The WDXRF method was compared for phosphorus with graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry and for sulphur with an oxygen combustion method. The detection limit was 2 mg kg-1 for both phosphorus and sulphur and the long-term precisions for phosphorus and sulphur were 3% and 5% (RSD), respectively, at 40-50 mg kg-1. The WDXRF method is also suitable for the determination of phosphorus in lecithins.

( -Ray Spectrom. 27, 26È30 (1998) The experiments were carried out using a Philips PW1404 x-ray Ñuorescence spectrometer with a chromium x-ray tube, 100 kV generator, six-position crystal changer and 72-position sample changer. The spectrometer was interfaced to a Digital Equipment PDP-11/ 53 computer with X40 software. The spectrometer operating conditions were 50 kV, 60 mA, helium atmosphere, 35 mm channel mask, germanium analysing CCC 0049È8246/98/010026È05 $17.50
