The N-terminus of ristocetin A and ristomycin A was found to be the p-hydroxyphenylglycine ring of ristomycinic acid by reductive alkylation of the peptide with acetone and NaCNBH3 followed by peptide hydrolysis and separation of the two rings of the isopropyl amino acid by hydrogenolysis.
