β¦ Synopsis
We have used second harmonic generation to directly observe chemical changes in a lipid monolayer. We observed that pK, of phexadecyl aniline at the air/water interface is 3.6& 0.2 versus 5.3 fO.l in the bulk. This fiftyfold increase in acidity is due to the higher free energy of a charged species at the air/water interface, which favors a shift in the equilibrium towards the neutral form.

The second harmonic generation from charged monolayers at air/water interfaces is shown to be linearly related to the interface electric potential. This dependence is due to the polarization of water molecules in the electrostatic field of the charged monolayer. The observed linear dependence of the
The dynamics of electronic excited states is studied for thin C~0 films on quartz by second harmonic generation. Time resolved measurements show that for films thicker than 100 nm a single excited state is observed, which is occupied in faster than 45 ps and decays over 20 ns or longer. Spectroscopi
The air/water interface of aqueous ( &butyloxycarbonyl)-tryptophan-tryptophan ( Boc-Trp-Trp) has been studied by surface second harmonic generation (SHG). The SHG signals obtained with a linearly polarised fundamental indicate a Langmuir-like adsorption isotherm. Wavelength-dependent circularly diff
Resonant optical second harmonic generation (SHG) is obtained from monolayers of 4-n-octyloxybenzoic acid (OBA) and noctyl-4-hydroxybenzoate (OHB) adsorbed at the water/ 1,2dichloroethane interface. The polarization dependence of the SHG from pure monolayers of OBA and OHB indicates that the molecul
