The inorganic and organic associations of trace elements in the kerogen of the New Albany shale were studied by analysis of kerogen fractions and a mineral residue (-85% Fe&) obtained by density separations. The degree of association of As, Co, Mn, Ni, Sb and Se with pyrite and/or marcasite (Fe&) was determined by the analysis of individual mineral grains by electron microprobe X-ray fluorescence (EMP-XRF) analysis and by analysis of the mineral residue treated with dilute HNO, to remove pyrite and marcasite.
