' The determination of alcohol by wet chemical procedures is made difficult by the fact that the alcoholic OH group is not very reactive;
of the physical methods, infrared spectroscopy has been used extensively.
However, with both chemical and infrared methods, only the total alcohol content is cletcrmined. This gives little information on the range of molecular weights in the sample. This is often important in mistures of alcohols. Further, unless the alcohol is substituted in thecu-position, these procedures clo not indicate the type of alcohol present.
The determination of alcohols by gas chromatography, however, provides a rapid procedure which indicates molecular weight distribution and the straight chain and branched chain alcohol content. This is particularly important in detergent manufacture. The degree of branching controls bacterial disposal of detergents. Since these are frequently maclc from aliphatic alcohols, the n-alcohol content is an important property of the product.
