Abstract

Asymmetries in the mass distribution of a projectile lead to rotational unbalance. A technique for determining this unbalance will be described. One must distinguish between static unbalance, where the centre of gravity does not lie on the axis of rotation, and dynamic unbalance, where the axis of rotation deviates from that of one of the principal moments of inertia. On firing, due to the spin of the projectile, both kinds of unbalance lead to a bending of the barrel. This is calculated using a simple theoretical model and measured values of moments of inertia and unbalance.
