โฆ Synopsis
Determination of molybdenum trioxide, total molybdenum, and total sulfur content of molybdenum disulfide
Analysis of molybdenum disulfide for its molybdenum trioxide, total molybdenum, and total sulfur content has been carried out in the past by tedious and timeconsuming gravimetric I -4 or colorimetric methods 5'6. The purpose of this communication is to show that the analysis time can be reduced by a factor of 3 to 4 if the conventional procedure to solubilize the sample is followed by an atomic-absorption measurement.
Molybdenum trioxide is leached from the molybdenum disulfide with a (1 + 1) ammonia-water mixture. The resulting solution is analyzed for molybdenum by atomic absorption. A separate sample of the molybdenum disulfide is roasted at a temperature of 575 ยฐ to convert it to molybdenum trioxide, which is then dissolved in ammonia solution. This solution is analyzed for its molybdenum content. Any molybdenum trioxide in the original sample is included in this assay. The sulfur content of the sample is determined with a Leco sulfur analyzer. These procedures eliminate the precipitations, separations, and gravimetric methods used previously and thereby decrease total analysis time.
