โœฆ Synopsis

A new method employing simultaneously two equilibrium properties, viz., the second virial and Joule-Thomson coefficients, has been developed to determine the force constants involved in spherically symmetric potential functions. The method is tested for nitrogen for which adequate experimental data e,xist.

A method is given for computing the fourth virial coefficient D(fl for a pairwise additive spherically symmetric interaction potential. Taking one of the four interacting particles as origin and using the appropriate co-ordinate transformations in the usual way the ninefold integrals defining D(fl a

Explicit formulas are given for the characters of symmetric and antisymmetric powers of an arbitrary representation up to the sixth, and a general method for obtaining the higher ones is described. The results allow, among others, the determination of nonvanishing higher force constants in symmetric
