The spectral element method is extended to problems involving arbitrary non-uniform waveguides by introducing an approximate tapered element. The depth of the cross-section is assumed to vary linearly, thus allowing an arbitrary variation to be modelled as a collection of piece-wise linear segments.

β¦ Synopsis
Cutoff frequencies in waveguides of external circular shape and an inner square boundary are determined by means of conformal mapping and a variational technique. The algorithmic procedure is quite straightforward, accurate and applicable to any doubly connected region provided that the mapping function is known in terms of a Laurent expansion.
