l%phcnyl, the lowest mcmbcr in the polyphcnyl scrics, is one of the more heat stable organic compounds. Along with biphclnyl oxide, it is used in industry as a heat transfer medium, unclcr the name of Dowthcrm. 'Cllc three isomcric terphcnyls and the higher polyphcnyls are cxpoctetl to be carefully invest&at& in the future, some in combination with biphenyl as heat transfer mcclia.
IVcliminary pyrolysis expcrimcnts on p-tcrl)hcnyl inclicatctl that one of the byproclucts is biphcnyl and that higher polymers' are to bc cspcctcd when polyphcnyls are hcatccl over long pcriocls of time. The determinatio~i of small amounts of biphcnyl in the prcscncc of large amounts of p-tcrphcnyl and associatccl polyphcnyls was the object of this rcscarch. -_---.._ * Tltis report is txisccl on sttidks cctttcluclctl fur Clw Atottttc: Ihcr gy Commissiott tlntlcr Contract A'F-1

The apparent water solubility of pyrene (pyr) was enhanced in the presence of the humic substances (HSs). To quantitatively treat the water solubility enhancement of pyr, the partition coefficients of pyr, I'&, were evaluated by considering the partition of pyr from water into HS. The log Kdoc value
## Abstract Superheated water (SHW) is an effective solvent for the extraction of a variety of environmental pollutants, but knowledge of the solubilities in water at elevated temperatures necessary to maximise the efficiency of the process is often lacking. Ambient temperature aqueous solubilities
