โฆ Synopsis
Measurements of electric birefringence (Kerr effect) were performed with atactic poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) at temperatures between room temperature and 145 ยฐ. The electro-optical response of the sample material consists of two components, which can be attributed to the ~-and fi-relaxation respectively. Whilst the time dependence of the latter could not be resolved with the equipment used, just above the glass transition temperature the s-relaxation elapsed within a few minutes. The relaxation times differed remarkably for rise and decay of the birefringence; the same behaviour was observed for the Kerr constants of the two components. From the results, a slight spatial orientation correlation could be concluded.
