✦ Synopsis

There is clear evidence implicating a role for angiotensin II in control of hypertrophic growth of vascular smooth muscle cells in vivo. However, the specific mechanisms whereby angiotensin II influences smooth muscle cell growth have not been defined. The focus of this mini-review is to consider h o w angiotensin II contributes t o control o f hypertrophic vs. hyperplastic growth of vascular smooth muscle in vivo, and in particular how the differentiated state of the smooth muscle cell may influence growth responsiveness to angiotensin II.

Hypertension has a high prevalence among subjects with decreased insulin sensitivity and/or hyperinsulinemia. Furthermore, angiotensin II plays a pivotal role in the regulation of vascular tone and is known to induce hypertrophy and/or hyperplasia in vascular smooth muscle cells. In the present stud

Glucose transport in response to angiotensin II (AII) was assessed in cultured vascular smooth muscle (VSM) cells by measuring the uptake of [ 3 H]-2-deoxyglucose, a radiolabeled non-metabolizable glucose analog. ## Abstract Angiotensin II is an octapeptide that regulates diverse cellular responses including the actin cytoskeletal organization. In this study, stable cell lines overexpressing wild‐type or catalytically inactive SHP‐2 were employed to elucidate the signaling pathway utilized by the SHP‐2 tyro

Structural changes within the blood vessel wall such as hyperplasia and hypertrophy of vascular smooth muscle cells are important factors in the pathogenesis of hypertension. Humoral growth factors such as angiotensin II (AII) and platelet-derived growth factor BB (PDGF-BB) may participate in the re

Recently we reported a novel means of regulating LIM domain protein function. Paxillin LIM zinc-finger phosphorylation in response to cell adhesion regulates the subcellular localization of this cytoskeletal adaptor protein to focal adhesions, and also modulates cell adhesion to fibronectin (Brown e
