A technique for the production and observation of excited states with subnanosecond resolution using a van de Graaff is described. Evidence is produced for the participation of higher excited states of toluene in the reaction observed.

We examine a report that emission can be observed from excited states of the uranyl ion, above that giving the usual green emission, in the light of new measurements. We can find no firm evidence for emission from such states.
