โฆ Synopsis
This paper describes a series of seeded fault tests performed on the double-helical gears in a marine gearbox and presents analyses of the vibration signals measured at two locations on the gearbox for each of "ve faults. It is shown that by applying recently developed techniques for the matching of consecutive synchronous averages and for the decomposition of synchronous averages into their components, clear indications of all but one of the sets of seeded faults can be obtained.

The application of the spectrogram to the calculation of the time-frequency distribution of a gear vibration signal is examined. The spectrogram represents the energy distribution of the signal over the frequency domain at every instant of time. The selection of the window function is discussed, and
Impulsive sound and vibration signals in machinery are often caused by the impacting of components and are commonly associated with faults. It has long been recognized that these signals can be gainfully used for fault detection. However, it tends to be difficult to make objective measurements of im
