β¦ Synopsis
The feasibility of using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry for detailed structural characterization of ethylene oxide-or perfluoroalkyl-modified poly(dimethylsiloxane) copolymers was investigated. Analysis of the results with the aid of a spread-sheet computer program afforded extensive information on the monomer units and their terminal groups for each macromolecular species in the copolymer. The analytical results also provide information about the manufacturing process of these materials, which are widely used in the cosmetics industry. The relationship between the structures of modified silicone copolymers and the detection sensitivity is discussed.
