Desymmetrization reactions of meso compounds through enantioselective catalysis are a powerful strategy for the synthesis of chiral molecules with multiple stereocenters. One well-known example is the Pd-catalyzed desymmetrization of meso-2-alkene-1,4-diol derivatives (Trosts Pd-catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation, AAA; Scheme 1 a).
