โฆ Synopsis
Vacuum greases have been studied to show what effect the use of any particular grease would have on the performance of a vacuum system. The work has shown greases to be roughly divided into two main groups, those whose vapour emission is mass dependent and those in which only the surface area is important. The results are shown in graphical form comparing samples of various greases of similar weights and also showing the degassing rates of various masses of the same grease. It was shown that the silicone grease used sparingly had a vapour emission rate similar to Apiezon M and would not adversely affect the vacuum performance, but if used lavishly could impair the vacuum performance. A/I Apiezons tested with the exception of API 01 were only dependent on surface area.
