Abstract

Self‐managed teams often fail because their overall organizations—typically traditional command‐and‐control hierarchies—are not designed to support them. In such an environment, underlying assumptions and structures sooner or later work against the teams. Because such organizations are so ingrained in our culture, it is often difficult for them to recognize the fact that they are the problem. Yes, difficult, but, as this article explains, not impossible. ©1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
