✦ Synopsis
This article explores issues confronted when designing a self-administered professional liability claims program. The authors have assumed that a thorough analysis has prompted the self-insured healthcare entity's decision to develop a self-administered program rather than to contract with a third-party administrator for claims management. However, this article does not address the advantages and disadvantages of self-administration.
For purposes of this article, the authors assumed the self-insured program encompasses professional liability exposures, as well as general liability exposures incident to the professional liability coverage of a multifacility healthcare system. We have further assumed that the claims will be selfadministered through a corporate claims department that reports to corporate upper management and interacts directly with the risk and/or claims managers for the individual facilikes within the system.
