Abstract
This article reviews the current state of knowledge in the analysis, design and construction of timber buildings to resist wind and earthquake loads. Similarities and differences in design philosophy and method are discussed and a selected list of references and reading materials is provided. Wind and earthquake disaster damage data consistently point to connection failure and inappropriate or poor quality construction as the primary causes of building damage. A complete and continuous load path should be ensured from the point of origin of the force to the point of final resistance. Total quality control at all stages of the design and construction process is essential.
