Abstract
In this paper, an all‐fiber birefringent filter was designed by using the Sagnac interferometer. The frequency spacing of the filter transfer function's two adjacent notches alternates between two different periods, which differs from the normal fiber loop mirror (FLM) and Lyot–Sagnac filters. A filter with over 40‐dB notch depth can be used as an optical label eraser in N × 20 Gb/s WDM all‐optical label swapping (AOLS) networks with 50‐GHz channel spacing. The results show that the filter is a high‐performance optical label eraser, and this work presents an approach for optical label erasing in high‐speed WDM AOS networks with narrow channel spacing. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
