โฆ Synopsis
A comprehensive theoretical treatment is presented for bound-mode to radiation mode coupling loss (transmission loss) and for bound-mode to bound-mode Bragg reflection (back reflection) in a sidetap fiber phase grating. The spectra of the reflection and transmission loss in a tilt angle range useful for fiber sidetap filter design is presented for the first time. Important dependencies between the designed wavelength of operation and parameters of the fiber grating, which give a clear understanding of the process of the fiber mode to radiation mode coupling and back reflection is also discussed. A practical procedure for the design of sidetap gain flattening filter is also presented.

## Abstract A tunable fiber Bragg grating (FBG) filter with a tuning resolution of less than one picometer (pm) is demonstrated. The FBG is embedded in carbonโfiber composite material, which is bent by using a simple mechanical setup. A tuning range of 2 nm and repeatability of less than 0.4% are o
EDFA preamplified receiยจers can achieยจe sensitiยจities close to those possible with heterodyne detection while offering a simplified system design. For this sensitiยจity benefit to be realized, narrow optical bandpass filters are needed to limit the EDFA amplified spontaneous ( ) emission ASE noise. T
We have developed and demonstrated a novel technique to manufacture large bandwidth grating with a nearly arbitrary transmittivity profile. The technique is based upon scanning the large chirped phase mask and controlling of the reflective index modulation distribution along the grating length.
