Abstract

A detailed design of a new optical biosensor using polymeric waveguides intended for blood glucose concentration measurements is presented. The device is based on a vertically stacked two‐waveguide ARROW structure integrated with an MSM photodetector, simplifying fabrication and avoiding posttuning of sensor parameters. Simulated results obtained for this device represent a significant improvement in performance when compared to conventional Mach–Zehnder sensors. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
