✦ Synopsis

A general procedure is proposed for the analysis and design of continuous multistage reactors in those instances for which the reaction rate expressions are nonlinear with respect to concentration. Curves relating the appropriate dimensionless input-output variables are developed for second order reaction and both segregated and microscopic mixing, and illustrate the procedure. The difference in average reaction rate for the two mixing situations does not atfect the number of independent parameters of the system. The dimensionless variables were chosen to reduce the number of independent parameters to the minimum necessary. The curves thus developed for second order combination reactions have reduced to a single sheet of graph paper the calculations that previously required a set of curves. The method is readily adapted to multistage calculations including combinations of completely mixed reactors and pipeline reactors.

In order to develop a bioreactor for solid to solid conversions the biocatalytic conversion of solid Ca-maleate to solid Ca-D-malate is studied. The dissolution of Ca-maleate is the Ðrst step in this process and is described here. A kinetic model, based on the interfacial-barrier theory and the di β€
