Abstract

We describe a design methodology for synthesizing diffractive elements based on two‐dimensional subwavelength cylindrical microstructures. We combine a numerical and experimental approach to demonstrate that by varying the diameter, pitch, and depth of subwavelength cylindrical occlusions in a homogenous substrate it is possible to produce multiphase diffractive elements. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
