non-linear dynamic behaviour, sufficient complexity and multiple faults. First, quantitative models for normal and faulty behaviour of the system were described. These models were used for a simulation which was built up by software components and integrated into the BEHAVIOR workbench. Finally, two BEHAVIOR diagnosis systems (MUDIA, GDE+) were tested in this simulation context. The results of this evaluation show that both systems are able to detect and to discriminate faulty behavior of components in a dynamic, non-linear system. The developed modules could be used for monitoring systems and diagnosis extensions to improve the safety and to support the crew. Furthermore, possible applications are the predictive simulation of system behaviour, the off-line fault analysis and the support of the system design by modelling and simulation of the plant. Recent research suggests that the abilities of a knowledge-based system (KBS) depend in part on the amount of explicit knowledge it has about the way it is designed . The selection and sequencing of orienting devices used in vibratory feeders is integral to the design of the feeders. However, because of the lack of organized, published guidelines, the selection and sequencing of orienting devices depends almost entirely on the experience of the skilled artisans w
