Thin elemental layers are thermally evaporated onto substrates to make a modulated structure that is close to the desired [(Bi 2 Te 3 ) x (TiTe 2 ) y ] thin-film superlattice. On annealing, the atoms begin to organize into an oriented supperlattice. At temperatures around 280 8C, a welldefined superlattice forms.
