Abstract

In this paper, a time‐domain method based on SPICE is presented for the simulation of nonlinear transmission lines (NLTLs) for shock‐wave generation in hybrid or monolithic technology. Attenuation due to skin‐effect losses, radiative losses, and coplanar waveguide transmission‐line dispersion are taken into account. Simulated results of a 95‐section NLTL excited by a 6 V and 16 ps fall time step‐like generator are shown. We show that the skin effect is the principal limitation when dealing with the output waveform minimum fall time. This demonstrates that the skin effect can no longer be neglected in the simulation process. © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 32: 17–21, 2002.
