โœฆ Synopsis

A multlstage, mechantcally starred column absorber has been destgned and budt with a modular con&u&on, based on prehmmary expenments with a test column The column has been characterized as a gas-liquid contactor by Its gas holdup, gas and hqmd ax& drspersron, nuxmg times. oxygen transfer coefficients and power consumptlons, determmed as a function of gas velocdy, hquld velocity and Impeller speed for one and two impellers per stage Gassed power was correlated wdh ungassed power, gas rate and tmpeller speed The gas phase axial nuxmg was essentially plug flow and the hquld phase axml rmxmg Cmed between 5 and 12 eqmvalent stages Oxygen transfer coefficients were correlated with power consumphons and aeration rates by the equation &_a 0~ (P/V)"(+)* The oxygen transfer coefficients with smgle stmer stages were 25% above those for the double stirrer stages for equal power consumption and gas rates Except for the low aeratton and lugh power consumpUon extremes, the column showed supenor oxygen transfer performance m comparison to tubular loop and tank fermenters
