✦ Synopsis

Desalted agricultural drainage water may offer a secondary source for potable water in the next years to cope with water needs in arid areas. The proper selection of the desalting scheme and its design as well as operational features is mandatory for the economic utilisation of this potential water source.

The present paper firstly outlines the rational approach for selecting the desalting system based on technical and economic considerations. Secondly, a computer software based on a modified short-cut method for reverse osmosis (RO) system design has been developed. Finally, the results obtained by application of the developed software for the design of a typical RO desalting facility have been discussed. SYMBOLS A RLF B CF -Hydraulic permeability constant, cm/s.atm -Applied pressure, averaging constant, equals 1, for spiral and tubular modules -Ratio of net osmotic pressure of feed to the transmembrane pressure, dimensionless -Cost of producing 1 m3 of fresh water, LE/m3

The daily performance of a 49 m3/d RO unit is reported in terms of the water and TDS transport parameters A and B, respectively. The rejections of the ions Na +, S042-, Cl-, and NO~-, and alkalinity, boron and selenium are also reported for the beginning and end of the testing period. The single sta
