We study the class of Tychonoff spaces that can be mapped continuously into R in such a way that the preimage of every nowhere dense set is nowhere dense. We show that every metric space without isolated points is in this class. We also give examples of spaces which have nowhere constant continuous

This paper considers the approximability of the largest common subtree and the largest common point-set problems, which have applications in molecular biology. It is shown that the problems cannot be approximated within a factor of n 1-in polynomial time for any ΒΏ0 unless NP β ZPP, while a general s
